Rebar-SticksThe Many Uses Of Rebar Sticks

In consideration of a concrete-based project, there are several different kinds of rebar sticks to consider during the early stages of design. Varying in price, the right rebar sticks for your project are highly dependent on the conditions to which your structure will be exposed.

Black steel rebar sticks are the industry standard for basic buildings and columns, as it is the cheapest kind of rebar and, despite being highly susceptible to rust, performs well where there is no moisture.

For marine environments such as dock pilings and some bridges, epoxy coated rebar is the best selection. Though more expensive than black steel rebar and exhibiting difficulty bonding to concrete, epoxy coated rebar sticks are far less susceptible to rust. Still, where concrete may be exposed to salt or salt water, as in locations where bridges are built near roadways where salt is applied to melt the ice in the winter, it is usually advisable to go one step up yet and use fiber reinforced polymer rebar sticks, as it the best defense against corrosion.

Rebar sticks made of stainless steel are typically used in the construction of highways, parking garages, multi-level skyscrapers, bridges, and coastal structures as it won’t corrode, rust or stain like ordinary steel. Because it contains chromium, stainless steel comes in a range of alloy types and grades. Once again, depending on the project, it’s important to select the right type, as some variations might be too soft or strong for certain applications. Tougher grades of stainless steel compound favorable physical strength over a wide range of temperatures and environmental conditions, including sufficient resistance to earthquakes. Also, stainless steel does not contain iron, meaning it is a non-magnetic alloy and can be used in MRI rooms. Typically, it is more expensive than even epoxy-coated rebar sticks but its crucial attributes outweigh cost in most applicable situations.
